3) The Department of Homeland Security protects the United States in many different ways like border security, emergency response, cybersecurity, and chemical facility inspector. Three of the main goals of the department are security, resilience, and customs and exchange. A very large number of people from across the US have a part in the department and help to keep it safe. These people are some that have direct contact with the public everyday. The department has only one weakness that I can see and that is they might be a little too big. This department has a lot of security to cover, but they have so many people that it could be hard to get anything that is emergent back to the department. They have a lot of strengths, whether it be their mission, the amount of people who help, or just how many people they have covering the security in the US and how many branches they have. “Our Mission.” Department of Homeland Security, 11 May 2016, www.dhs.gov/our-mission. I think The Department of Homeland Security is extremely important. Without it all of our information would be out for the world to see and without emergency response this world would be an unsafe place. I believe as you stated their strengths override their weaknesses!

7) The Hatch Act was a federal law that passed in 1939. This law limited political activities of federal employees and local government employees. The reason that this law was put into effect was to stop the administration of nonpartisan fashions, to protect federal employees from political coercion in the workplace, and to ensure that federal employees were advanced based on merit and not on political affiliation. In 2012, the Hatch Act was amended to be the Hatch Act Modernization Act of 2012. The new law now stated that state and local government employees can run for partisan political office unless the employee’s salary is paid for entirely by loans or grants. Some examples of the Hatch Act being used are a federal employee using their position to sway an election, running for public office, and engaging in political activities while on the job. “Hatch Act - Definition, Examples, Cases.” Legal Dictionary, 17 Aug. 2016, legaldictionary.net/hatch-act/. I agree with this Act because i believe that all people running in elections should have a fair chance at winner and if not, what is the point of having an election if the outcome is already decided through unfair campaigning and such.

8) The Federal Vacancies Act of 1998 is a US law that establishes the procedure for a filling of vacancy in an appointed officer of an executive agency during the time before a permanent replacement is appointed. An example of this is Deputy Attorney General, Rosenstein and Donald Trump to see if he will be leaving office. This deals with the act because it is not clearly stated in the act about how someone leaves the office. Bomboy, Scott. “A Look at the Vacancies Reform Act.” National Constitution Center – Constitutioncenter.org, National Constitution Center, 26 Sept. 2018, constitutioncenter.org/blog/a-look-at-the-vacancies-reform-act. I think this act was a smart idea, just so theres always someone to fill the spot is something were to happen. Without this, if someone were to have to fall out of power, it would be a huge ordeal to pick someone to step up into such a large amount of power.

Although there are usually not a lot of vacancies in government positions, it is super helpful that there is someone in line because if there were not and something were to happen to a spot in government, there could be drastic consequences until someone is replaced.

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) went into effect in 1967, it stated that any person in the US has the given right to access any federal document. For the individual to do so they must use and have a FOIA form to request access. The form must then be sent to the agency in which has the documents the person wants to access. The contribution to federal bureaucracy is that most importantly, this gives access to many more government jobs, but these employees must make sure that this act is carried out, and it makes it so these employees can’t get away with anything at all. The Privacy Act went into effect in 1974, it is for the protection of people’s information meant to be kept private (social security, taxes), and now people can only request their own information. The contribution to federal bureaucracy is that is restricts the bureaucracy over all, and it gives the bureaucracy more responsibility to keep this information private. A whistleblower is a person that works for the government that expresses illegal or dishonest acts happening in a certain organization. The Whistleblower Protection Act (WPA) went into effect in 1989, it was put into place to protect the government employees from giving out information about the illegal or dishonest acts occurring in a certain government organization. The WPA has an effect on the federal bureaucracy by providing a check on abuse and fraud. Protects the system by not allowing abuse of power, and most importantly denying certain raises, the reducement of hours, or the punishment of certain whistleblowers in a way that would violate the law. This all upholds the right of the 1st amendment. #6 The iron triangle refers to a relationship made through policy between a bureaucratic agency, a congressional committee, and an interest group. The most prevalent of these three is the congressional committee, these are the ones that use money for campaigning and are the key point in the iron triangle. Some iron triangles are even made by the “revolving door” process, this occurs usually due to the high levels of interactions between the three different parts of the iron triangle. Iron triangles in defense purpose is to help the military, take security measures, fund research outings, and increase or decrease spending. Some agencies are: CIA, State Department, and DOD. The revolving door of the iron triangles in defense is military. Iron triangles in agriculture is based on the goals of the certain interest group. Some agencies are: FDA, Agricultural research service, USDA, and Farm Service Agency. The revolving door of the iron triangles in agriculture is the FDA and Monsanto. This is all great Nathan. I also did question 4 and I had not thought about the fact that The Freedom of Information Act would create more jobs. The Privacy Act is a great act that keeps certain information that people would like to have private, private.

This is all great information Landon. The spoils system was just a bad way of getting what you wanted in politics, I guessed that's why it was called spoil. The Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act has employed a lot of people in this country and has helped greatly.
