Additionally, Federalist No. 51 explains how constitutional provisions of separation of powers and checks and balances control abuses by majorities. Read Federalist 51 (link above), and the following questions in one, thoughtful post on the weebly. Please address all questions asked. According to Madison, what is the nature of man and government? In his opinion, what is the best kind of government? What is human nature? How should we guard against tyranny? The great problem in framing a government is that a government must be able to control the people, but equally important, must be forced to….? What branch does Madison believe is the most powerful? Why? Since the legislature dominates republican government, what can be done to limit the power of the legislature? Describe the main point of Federalist 51. Once you have completed your initial post, make at least one comment on the post of another classmate from each different group. For example, if you completed the questions about Brutus I, comment on one post about Federalist 10 and one about Federalist 51.

James Madison believed man was at his best when capable of self reason and discipline, government was a true reflection of the people. Madison also believed, in his opinion, that the legislative branch is the most powerful. He states that legislative is most powerful because “a dependence on the people is… the primary control on the government,” and the legislative branch is most dependent on the people. Human nature is “the general psychological characteristics, feelings, and behavioral traits of humankind, regarded as shared by all humans.” The Constitution could prevent tyranny by dividing each powers between state and central government. There is a equal representation from all the states in the Legislative Branch by using checks and balances. Since the legislature dominates republican government, they could limit the power of the legislature by dividing congress, which would give the two houses two different means of election, with this is would fortify the executive with powers to veto. The main point of Federalist 51 is it “addresses means by which appropriate checks and balances can be created in government and also advocates a separation of powers within the national government.”

James Madison and the Anti-Federalists both believed that the legislative branch would be the most powerful which is interesting because they think a lot different about the subject. Madison believes that it is a great thing that the legislative branch is the most powerful. The Anti-Federalists on the other hand, believe that the legislative branch has far too much power. I thought this was very interesting to find out that they had a common thought but not the same outlook on it.

I agree, because my viewpoint is just like Madison's, I believe there are always should have a way to connect people and government. Government should elected from people and served people.

This is all very interesting Courtney. I like that we have this because checks and balances are almost essential to our government and we do need separation of powers within the national government.

James Madison believed that the interest of a man must be connected with the constitutional rights of the place. He believes that a Republic is the best form of government because the power surrendered by the people is first divided between two distinct governments, and then the portion allotted to each subdivided among distinct and separate departments. This is beneficial to making the people heard and having more representation. Human nature is a bundle of fundamental characteristics, including ways of thinking, feeling, and acting, which humans tend to have naturally. Tyranny would be prevented because of the split power between state and central government. Madison talks a lot about the importance of the legislative branch, including that it is required. The main idea of Federalist 51 is to address how checks and balances can be created within the government, and it also explains how a split in the powers within the national government is beneficial.
