Find three job openings within the federal bureaucracy that you would be interested in applying for after college. You may chose a position that requires a bachelor's degree, or a master's degree if you are planning on the latter, but you must pick a position that does not require significant experience. Try to find jobs in places where you are interested in living. Include in one post the title, description, and basic requirements for each position, AND why it interests you.

Critical Care Nursing in the US Air Force is a job I have thought about before. As an Air Force Critical Care Nurse, I would step in if an Airman or their family member were in critical care. Critical Care Nurses need to be quick on their feet in high risk situations. Some Requirements for this position include a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing that is accredited by the NLN or CCNE, completion of a 5.5 week Commissioned Officer Training course, and being within the ages of 18 and 47. This job interests me because I plan on getting my Master’s in Nursing anyway, and there is a base in Georgia, which is where I plan on living. I think that being an Occupational Health Nurse for the CIA would be very interesting. The roles of an OHN are to provide a range of occupational health services, such as identifying and assessing occupational and non-occupational illness and injuries, and also administer a full range of immunizations and provide medical information to those traveling overseas. Requirements include, a Bachelor’s degree in one of 6 given paths, basic life support qualifications, and a background check. I think that being a RN for the Federal Bureau of Prisons would be a good career path for me. The roles of a Prison Nurse are to provide a full range of nursing services to inmates in Federal prisons, including, assessing, diagnosing, and evaluating the medical condition of inmate patients. RNs provide information to other health care team members and contribute to the maintenance or restoration of health status. Along with all other correctional institution employees, RNs are also charged with responsibility of maintaining the security of the institution. To be a prison nurse, I would only need have to have a RN, with training like a prison guard. Though I think it would be good experience working with inmates and being trained like a correctional officer, the pay would not be enough for me. There is a prison in Atlanta, which is a reason I would consider it.

There is an engineering psychologist position opening up in Norfolk, Va. This position is for the United States Fleet Forces Command. Having a undergraduate bachelor’s degree in psychology would start me off but, completing my master’s degree in this field would help, then a doctoral degree is a major plus. The doctoral degree can take well over 5 years, but it would help me make more money in this work field. Engineering psychologists focus on the relationships between people and products used everyday. They help to save human lives, and reduce error in the workplace which helps make life overall safer. This interests me because it is close to home, and I am going into the psychology field. My overall goal is to help people, so I would love to go into this work field. Also in Norfolk, Va, there is a Special Agent: Psychology/Counseling position opening up at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI.) I have to have a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Science degree to work in this field, but any other advanced degrees are good for the salary boost. Being a special agent in the FBI with a psychology position understands human behavior so I would watch out for change in behavioral patterns to help keep people safe. This interests me because again, it is close to home and I want to go into this field. The goal as working in the FBI is to help keep people's minds on track, and keep their behaviors monitored. Then, in Hampton, Va, there is a Psychiatric Technician job opening. This position is at the Federal Staffing Resources (FSR) building. I’ve got to graduate with any type of degree in psychology, which is what I plan on doing. Psychiatric technicians assist in treatment and help patients, like mental status exams and substance abuse evaluations on all patients. I’ve got to monitor, record, and reports on my patient’s everyday and note their progress or downfall. This interests me because it is close to home, so I may be able to live at home and the job description sounds like exactly what I would want to do in the future. Keeping patients healthy is all I want to endure in the future, so again a perfect match.

Three jobs within the federal bureaucracy that I found interesting were a Guidance Counselor in the National Guard, a gardener for Gateway Arch National Park, and an equal opportunity specialist under the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The guidance counselor position is in New Orleans, Louisiana. The description is to “provide a full range of general education and career development counseling and assistance to DoD civilians, military personnel and dependents of the command and attached organizations.” Some basic requirements are that the one applying needs to have a background investigation, needs to be a U.S. citizen, and they have to participate in direct deposit. It interests me because I work well with people, it sounds cool, and it’s in New Orleans. The second job is a gardener for Gateway Arch National Park. Some of the responsibilities are to perform seasonal gardening tasks, pulls weeds, and sweeps sidewalks. Some requirements are that a U.S. citizenship is required, they need a background investigation, and they are required to participate in the direct deposit program. I like this one because I have always wanted to garden more, the park looks beautiful, and it would be a nice change of pace. The last job that looked interesting was an equal opportunity specialist. The job is in Boston, Massachusetts. The description is involved in “intake/assessment and/or investigation, conciliation, and resolution of complex, highly sensitive and difficult allegations of discrimination related to housing and the failure to provide economic opportunities pursuant to Section 3 of the Housing and Urban Development Act of 1968.” Some requirements are that the applicant needs to have 1 year of experience and needs to have a master’s degree. This is probably the job I’m least interested in but it would still be cool to work in Boston and have a job that’s still important but that a lot of people don’t think about as much.
