Hernando de Soto was a Spanish explorer and considered a Conquistador. He was involved in the explorations regarding the Yucatan Peninsula, Nicaragua, Mississippi, and Florida. He worked alongside Pizzaro in the conquest of the Incan Empire, but he is mostly known for being the first European to lead an expedition through the present-day southern states of the U.S. He was also the first European to cross the Mississippi River. His main objectives were to discover a passage leading to China or the Pacific Coast and to find gold. De Soto’s Floridian expedition contributed to the Colombian Exchange. For example, the escaped pigs brought by Soto had become relative ancestors to the now existing wild boars that occupy the southern U.S.

I agree that Hernando de Soto was an important explorer because he was the first to explore the southern states of America. It was also very important that he traveled the Mississippi River. I find that his escaped pigs that became the wild boar that roam the southern part of the US is very interesting.

I also believe that Hernando de Soto was a very influential European explorer because he didn't only help conquer Indian tribes like the Incan's but he also was the first people to explore and cross the Mississippi river not only that but he also exploring all of the south and Florida defiantly makes him one of the most influential explorers of his time period.

Jacques Cartier was a French explorer who was sent to the New World to search for goods and for another route to Asia. His discoveries helped to change the world by naming a territory that makes up a portion of North America. Some of Jacques Cartier's accomplishments were that he discovered Canada and gave the country its official name, and this also led to the discovery of the Saint Lawrence River. When Cartier took the Saint Lawrence River to Canada, the waterway vastly expanded into parts of Canada that had yet to be discovered. While Cartier and his crew were venturing north on the Saint Lawrence river he encountered the friendly Iroquois nation. They taught him how to survive and traded with him. Cartier originally went on this expedition on order of the king Francis to claim riches and land. So the Saint Lawrence river allowed him to claim new lands for France that today is known as Canada.

I agree with Allison and Emma, Jacques Cartier was a very important explorer. The fact that he discovered up to a third of North America and a very important transportation system such as the ST. Lawrence River, makes him a significant contributor to global exploration. This allowed for many more explorations in the future.

I agree that Cartier was a very important explorer. The fact that he was one of very few explorers to actually make peace with the Native Americans instead of driving them out is significant. He also traded back and forth between continents before the Colombian Exchange. He also gave Canada a start, which allowed the country to become what it is today.

The most influential explorer was Ferdinand Magellan. Magellan and his crew were the first group of people to circumnavigate the globe. Magellan was born sometime around 1480 and was portugease. King Charles the first assigned him to find a west route to the Spice islands. He put together the spanish expedition to head to the East Indies in 1519,the expedition was made up of about 5 ships. His crew ended up circumnavigating the globe, while Ferdinand died in the philippines during a battle. The trip took 3 years to complete and only one out of the 5 ships returned, almost all of his crew died, only 18 returning out of 270 crew members.

I agree with Jon that Ferdinand Magellan was the most influential person in history, because circumnavigating the globe, is a very important aspect to history today. We can use this knowledge that he discovered to make new discoveries, and compare and contrast them with other influential people. We might not know the important details if it was not from Magellan circumnavigating the globe.

I agree that Ferdinand Magellan was one of the most influential explorers in history considering that he and his crew weree the first to circumnavigate the globe. He was the first person to attempt this, since people did not believe it was possible. He also discovered the Pacific Ocean and named it. Without his discoveries, the world we know today would be different considering the fact that he changed history forever.

I agree the Ferdinand Magellan was one of the most influential explorers. Even though he died before the expedition was completed, he founded the Pacific Ocean and set the path for the rest of his crew to be the first people to circumnavigate the world.

In our opinion,Vasco Núñez de Balboa(1475-1519) is the most influential explorer. Because he was the first person who lead a team of european to see the pacific ocean , and he took an adventure at the panama canyon. After that he established a colony in Panama called Antigua at 1510, and he became the new Governor at there. He was from western spanish. Antigua is the first city colonized by the Spanish colonists on the continental United States and is now located in Colombia. His deeds are continuous and story-telling, of which Santa Maria was founded because Balboa suggested moving the settlement to the Darien area west of Uraba Bay. Mainly because he saw the fertility of the land there, and the resistance of Native Americans was low. Then Fernández de Enciso encountered a tribe with 500 indigenous warriors and the battle started. It was a tough fight for both sides, but in the end the Spaniards won. Aboriginal warriors gave up the town and went to the jungle. The Spaniards plundered the entire town and placed all the treasures and gold in the treasure house.

In 1534, Jacques Cartier was sent to lead a voyage to the New World by King Francis I in search of riches and a new route to Asia. Jacques Cartier is known to be a state-funded explorer who helped the king of France, King Francis I. Jacques Cartier is the most influential French explorer; during the 16th century, Cartier claimed Canada for France. Jacques Cartier landed in the areas around Newfoundland, in which he began exploring the St. Lawrence River. He ran across two indian tribes, Iroquois and Mi’kmaq, and traded with the Iroquois. Cartier planted a cross, and then claimed land for the king of France. When the Iroquois changed their state of mind, Cartier kidnapped two of the captain’s sons. Cartier continued his voyage home, and believed he had found the coast of Asia. In 1535, Cartier set on a voyage up the St. Lawrence River while believing he was traveling through the Northwest to the east. Cartier reached the Hochelaga, but could not go any further because of the harsh waters on the river. Cartier found jewels and gold in return for metal pans and hatchets for furs. King Francis I was very pleased with Cartier when he and his crew returned, for bringing him everything he sent him to do. Cartier almost never came back from voyages with bad news, he tried to always make it possible to bring back what the king wanted.

I agree that Jacques Cartier was an influential explorer because he claimed land for France. He would also please the king by bringing back good news which means he discovered a lot. He was also one of the first people to discover Canada and claim land. It also shows that he was very influential because he made people want to explore more up north. And without him exploring north there might not be French speaking city's in Canada.

Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer. One of the things that Magellan has done is discovered a route to the spice islands with a fleet of five ships with 270 members by convincing the Spanish king, the route is now named the Strait of Magellan. After Magellan was able to discover the Strait of Magellan, he continued to sail west which made travel to many different places like the islands of the Marianas and reaching the Philippines. When Magellan reached the Philippines he had a power struggle with a hostile leader which lead to Magellan and a lot of his crewmen’s death. After the death of Magellan and the crewmen, the rest of the crew lost the second to the last ship. With a crew of 18 people the crew was in bad shape, and it took them three years to get back to spain, but when they got back they were able to provide new information with the biggest info being the size of the Earth.

Christopher Columbus was one of the first English explorers to come to the new land. He was born in Genoa, Italy on August 26th 1451. Columbus’s family was a middle class family and he began working at a young age. He had two sons, they were named Diego and Ferdinand Columbus. Columbus was the only explorer back in that time period to cross the Atlantic four times. Columbus’s initial thought when he was leaving Europe, was that if he sailed west he would land around the west Indies. He was looking to find spices in or around the west Indies. Some of Columbus's accomplishments were, he independently discovered the Americas. He led the first exploration to the Carribean, Central America and South America. He served as a governor in Hispaniola for a few years. Columbus had a big impact on the Exploration community because after he explored and came back to Europe. Everyone wanted to go to the Americas and see what was over there. Columbus was influential because he had the courage to go explore new land and meet the natives. Since Columbus did the voyage four times, he had a lot of information on the routes to take. The Europeans had a plethora of information because of Columbus’s findings. When he went in 1492, he had no information to help him take the correct route or any way of knowing where they were going to land. He was just sailing west in hope to find the west Indies. That’s why he was so famous because he had the courage to explore somewhere that he had no information on. Overall he wasn’t a very good person for what he did to the Native Americans and how he stole all of their property. He also raped the Native Americans and abused them.

Christopher Columbus is one of the most influential and important explorers for Spain. He was the first Europeanians to voyage to the New World. His actions made Spain the first country in Europe to go to the New World. For his discovery of the New World for Europe he is accredited for the Europiean conquerors that went to the New World to conquer land. He lied about what the New World would offer in riches to the people back in Spain, so he would be known as a good explorer. Christopher Columbus was arrested and taken back to Spain for his false accusations of the New World having riches. When he returned to spain he faced the royal court for the charges. The charges were eventually dropped, but he lost his titles as governor of the Indies. He also lost most of his riches he made during his journeys. Christopher Columbus had made 4 voyages across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain in 1492, 1493,1498 and 1502. The reasoning for his multiple voyages after the first one and was in purpose to find a direct water route west from Europe to Asia. He never even ended up finding the water route. Another reason he is considered the most influential explorer is because of the cruelty he laid upon the Native Americans. The first time he saw them he forcefully took them to become his servants, and throughout his time in the Americas he would take Natives and make them work in mines looking for riches, such as gold. He also introduced the Natives to disease, such as measles. Christopher Columbus also helped lead the Age of Exploration which was horrible for the Native Americans, in which they forcefully made the Natives relocate to somewhere else or the Natives were killed, either by the Spaniards or the diseases the Spaniards brought to the Americas.

Hernando de Soto was a Spanish adventurer. He explored Mississippi, Florida and Nicaragua. He explored the southern region of the US. He was believed to be the first to cross the mississippi river. His most important explorations were to find gold and a path to china. For instance, What Soto did back then affected habitat and the animal food chain in today’s society, likewise , The main reason we have hogs in the southern united states today was due to Soto and his escaped pigs which made themselves into the wilderness and to mate and increase their population and spread among the southern states.
