Unit 5: The Birth of Modern America
It is the turn of the century, and life in America is changing more everyday than it ever has before. New inventions have changed the way people live. New industries can employ the millions of immigrants coming in from Europe through Ellis Island. Urbanization continues and cities like New York, Chicago, and Detroit suffer from over-crowding, poor sanitation, fires, and crime. Immigrants also flow through Angel Island on the West Coast. The Chinese help build our new form of transportation, the railroads, until new immigration laws prevent them from entering the US. This time is also called the Gilded Age, a place of slums and palaces. The rich are very rich and the poor are very poor. With the changes made over the next 20 years, the gap will start to get smaller.
