Unit 4: The Civil War & Reconstruction
Tension between the North and South continued to rise through the addition of states, exploration of new territories, shifts in the economy, and new tariffs on Southern imports. Even though part of the same country, the regions were very different. Northerners were merchants, dock workers, and city dwellers, with more access to schools, businesses, and basic necessities. Southerners were farmers, who lived farther apart and worked hard for the conveniences they wanted. Americans were culturally differentiated by region. When Abraham Lincoln won the election to the Presidency in 1860, South Carolina considered it the last straw and seceded from the Union. Other states followed and soon a new nation, the Confederate States of America, was formed. Soon the two nations were fighting each other, the North for reunification, and the South for freedom. After four long years, the South will admit defeat, and the new United States will work hard to sew up the pieces of a tattered union.
